Doggy are a French indie pop band with an obvious love of Subway, Sarah and Matinee Records. In fact Mon Colonel is packed with tunes that would grace any of those labels despite me not knowing what they are singing about as they sing in their native tongue throughout. That makes my decision to skip my French classes at the age of 13 even more stupid! However the music more than makes up for it from the Field Mice style percussion, Fanfarlo-ish trumpets combined with the jangling 1980’s guitar sound which soon makes the language barrier somewhat irrelevant.
Of the eight tracks here Je Suis Ne Sur Un Bateau (of which I am assured roughly translates as being born on a boat) and the synth pop/trumpets of Paris 2012 are the highlights here. Only on the long winded and very Eurovision sounding Les Jours De Transition do Doggy let the side down. Throw these doggies a bone!

What was a solo project for Guillaume on the first record several years back is now a full band on the second! And with the new lineup, the sound on this record is a lot better (as is usually the case - live drums beat a drum machine) and the songs a bit livelier than before, as well. They also feel considerably sunnier in mood, which makes this record much more instantly enjoyable. Musically, I'm reminded of the first Club 8 album, Pencil Tin, Lovejoy and fellow Frenchmen, Des Garçons Ordinaires, as Doggy adds touches of elegance to their jangly pop, giving it a little something extra. All of the lyrics are in French again, but that shouldn't stop you from bouncing and even humming along while listening to this! MTQ=8/8

POP N CHERRIES
The golden age of French Anorak Pop circa 1992-1996 is engraved somewhere deep in our hearts and seminal names like Des garçons ordinaires, Les Freluquets, Les Chaplinn's or Les Poissons Solubles have now officially been declared national lost treasures. Amongst those once legendary indie labels like Cornflakes Zoo, Alienor or Rosebud, Anorak Records has resurfaced from that revolved period without losing its initial spirit, being now integrally part of those new generation labels, releasing CDR's from pop bands all over the world, mainly discovered through Myspace. Guillaume Bassard, Doggy's frontman, formerly of the fabulous Caramel, was the soul behind this resurrection -back in 2003- firstly intended for the release of Doggy's debut album "Des stars dans tous les bus", literally "Stars in every bus" , a quite promising opus, made of jangly guitars, some strings too!, and even ...some english words !

Six years later, with this brand new EP, the bus has become an airplane, quicker, bigger, safer, with an aerodynamical deluxe fuselage. Initial double propulsion is ensured by "Mon Colonel" and the well-known "Les petits parcours", both straightforward clap-along hits. The flight in itself is delightfuly running after Caramel footsteps with a bit of Arnold Turboust in the back, testimony of insouciance and generosity. The landing is the crown achievement of the voyage, with "Les jours de transition" and "Paris 2012", confirming that Guillaume's songwriting skills can reach stratosphere upper regions..."Je prends de l'altitude par rapport à la pelouse"... KINGEM
Doggy, anciennement Caramel, est un groupe conduit par Guillaume Bassard qui est aussi aux manettes de Anorak Records, label de Limoges. Quel plaisir de découvrir cet artiste français et le titre Mes Petits Parcours il y a quelques mois sur une compilation du label américain Series Two Records. (cf kingem 18/02/09)
Quand on écoute ce titre, fraîchement pop, aérien, mélodiquement envoûtant, on se prend à rêver qu’un album suivra. Inechala ! La durée d’un rêve est estimée à 10 minutes par nuit, Doggy aura été plus rapide pour offrir Mon Colonel, sorti le 18 Mars 2009.
C’est aux côtés de Stéphane Pomédio alias Fanou, bassiste, de Stéphane Balanche, batteur, que Guillaume aborde ses munitions pop au clavier, trompette, flûtes et à la grandiloquente guitare (Paris 2012). La voix de Guillaume tournoie, légère et authentique. Mon colonel est d’une efficacité absolue. L’album est une armada de surprises, tant par la tenue des airs qui tanguent et voltigent que par les paroles affûtées et sucrées, dignes du sorbet citron à la vodka.
Le QG du colonel Doggy, Anorak Records, au sein de la belle Limoges de porcelaine, berceau du peintre Renoir, avec sa gare des Bénédictins, ses arts du feu, redore le blason de la pop française depuis 2003 mais aussi de groupes norvégiens, anglais, finlandais, américains comme Soda fountain rag, Strawberry Story, Utah Rangers, Desmond Reed, The French Defence, Snow Coloured Kid, En Français. Doggy propose un joli rendez-vous « raid » le 21 mai prochain à Limoges pour une « décharge » de sons pop en la compagnie du groupe de Clermont-Ferrand, les Wendy Darlings.
